Lodi Locals

Happy Day, Lodi.

Quick Lodi fact before we get into it: the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds have hosted everything from livestock competitions to presidential campaign stops since the first opening in 1907. This Sunday they're hosting bocce ball, a world-renowned tenor, and a Boss of the Sauce competition. Things have changed. Mostly for the better.

Here's what's in this edition:

  • Festa Italiana at the Grape Festival Grounds this Sunday — live music on two stages, Pasquale Esposito headlining, Italian food, kids zone, $15 at the door

  • Lodi Vinyl Tap at IDOL Beer Works same afternoon — free, all ages, DJ M-80, hundreds of records

  • Summer Reading Program kicks off Saturday at the Lodi Public Library, open to kids, teens, and adults

  • Community Spotlight on the Coldani family: four generations of farming, 100 years of Lodi soil, and a tasting room that pairs olive oil with Zinfandel

  • Lodipalooza is coming June 20 — STP, Green Day, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, and Soundgarden tribute bands all day at Oak Farm Vineyards

Let's get into it.

Community Spotlight

The Coldani Family & Calivines Winery & Olive Mill

Most families pass down recipes. The Coldani family passed down an entire farm. Four generations deep and over 100 years into working the soil of the San Joaquin Valley, the Coldanis didn't start with wine. They started with olives. And they started small, with every intention of keeping it that way. About twelve years ago they opened their Calivirgin brand on Thornton Road. The original plan was straightforward: grow the olives, press the oil, sell what they made. What nobody quite planned for was that the business would keep expanding.

The expansion that changed everything came in 2021, when the family celebrated a grand opening at their new building on Thornton Road — a full tasting room featuring both an olive oil bar and a wine bar under one roof. The idea had been fermenting for years. "Wines have a public presence in Lodi, and our evolving business plan included wine," said Julie Coldani, the family's marketing director. The pivot wasn't a departure from their roots. It was the natural next chapter for a family that had spent decades producing oil with that same obsessive attention to quality. After more than a decade of premium olive oil, they brought those same standards to small-batch wines, handcrafted from carefully selected Lodi grapes.

Today, their tasting room on Thornton Road is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a covered outdoor space that's kid and pet-friendly, and live music every Sunday afternoon. It's one of those spots where you walk in for a quick tasting and leave two hours later with a bottle of Malbec and a jar of lemon jalapeño olive oil you didn't know you needed. If you haven't been out there yet, the Calivines Winery & Olive Mill is the kind of place that makes you feel lucky to live here.
