Lodi Locals
Happy Friday, Lodi.
Friday in June and the whole weekend is sitting right in front of you. Here is something most people stroll past without knowing: the water we call Lodi Lake spent its early years as Smith's Lake, and a woman named Estella Smith ran her ranch on that ground for 35 years before it ever became a park. She is back this Saturday, sort of, and we will get to that.
In today’s Lodi Locals:
Two tribute bands and the Maroon 5 and No Doubt of it all
The Art Hop returns to Veterans Park, free and open to everyone
Kayak demos on the water for anyone curious to try before they buy
Pancakes, roller derby, and a fundraiser breakfast
A living history walk where the lake tells you its own story
Let's get into it.

The 3 Queens of Motown | Saturday, July 11 | 7:00 pm
Three powerhouse performers take the stage at Hutchins Street Square for a Las Vegas-style tribute to Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and Aretha Franklin. Lea Sweet plays Tina, Stacy Carter brings Diana Ross to life, and Samantha Alexes steps in as Aretha, and the whole show is backed by a nine-piece band with costumes, attitude, and energy to match. Special guest "Kool" Wind and Fire opens the night with their tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire and Kool and the Gang. Get tickets and full details through the Hutchins Street Square event page, or call 209-333-6700 for wheelchair accessible seating.

Groovin' in the Grove ft. Animals & Gwen in Doubt | Saturday, June 13 | 7:00 pm
This is the big one. Animals brings the Maroon 5 catalog and Gwen in Doubt covers the No Doubt and Gwen Stefani years, which means you get sharp pop hooks and ska bounce in the same night under the oaks at Jessie's Grove. Bring a low chair and plan to dance on the lawn rather than sit politely. You can lock in your spot and see what is included on the official Groovin' in the Grove listing, and going in with a ticket already in hand beats sorting it out at the gate. It feels like a festival without leaving town.

Lodi Art Hop | Saturday, June 13 | 10 am to 2 pm
The Art Hop is back at Veterans Park and it stays one of the easiest free mornings in town. You get an outdoor gallery with more than ten local artists selling work, art making for every age, live music in the park, and the kind of slow loop where you end up talking to the person who made the thing you just bought. You can check the featured artist lineup and partner gallery stops on the Lodi Arts Foundation page before you go. Wander down, fill out the Art Hop passport, and let the kids paint something.

Lightweight Kayak Demo Day | Saturday, June 13 | 11 am to 1 pm
If you have ever wanted to try a kayak before committing to one, this is the morning to do it. The Boathouse puts lightweight boats from brands like Stellar and Eddyline on the water so you can paddle a few, feel the difference, and figure out what actually fits you. Details and demo brands live on the Boathouse demo day page, and it is worth calling ahead to confirm the window before you load up the car. Even if you are just curious, watching is half the fun.

Pancake Breakfast Mixer ft. Lockeford Roller Derby | Saturday, June 13 | 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
Start Saturday with a stack and a side of roller derby. The Lockeford crew is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Grape Festival grounds, which is the rare event where you can eat syrup at ten in the morning and call it community support. You can confirm hours and parking through the Lodi Grape Festival grounds before you head over. Bring cash and bring an appetite.

Paint Night at Blend Ultra Lounge | Wednesday, June 17 | 6:00 pm
If you want a mid-week night out that actually has a plan, Blend Ultra Lounge is hosting a paint night this Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $40 per person and cover all supplies, snacks, and one drink, so you are not showing up and getting nickel-and-dimed at the bar. It is 21 and over, so this one is squarely in the date-night or girls-night category. RSVP by texting or calling 209-906-9315 since spots are limited.

Estella Smith Living History Tour | Saturday, June 13 | 10 am
Here is the lake story I promised. Friends of Lodi Lake docent Alane Dashner steps into the character of Estella Smith, who ran her ranch on what was then called Smith's Lake from 1902 to 1937, before any of it became the park you know. You get a short reenactment at the Nature Area Amphitheater followed by a guided walk through the eyes of a pioneer, which is exactly the kind of thing that sticks with a kid longer than a screen does. The route is mostly level and paved, admission is free, and you only pay for parking. You can read more about the Nature Area programs through Friends of Lodi Lake.

Youth Cooking Class at Emanuel Lutheran | Thursday, June 18 | 11 am
This one is free, limited, and genuinely useful for kids who are old enough to actually learn something in the kitchen. Emanuel Lutheran is hosting a youth cooking class for ages 9 to 16 where they will be learning to make breakfast from scratch. Spaces are limited so you need to call 209.334.2130 or email [email protected] to get your kid signed up before it fills.

✨Community Spotlight

There is something that hits differently about a group of healthcare workers spending their team-building day stuffing backpacks for kids they will never meet. That is exactly what Sutter Health nurses did recently, and the Lodi Boys and Girls Club shared it with quiet pride on their Facebook page: 100 backpacks filled with school supplies, ready to go out the door at their annual back-to-school event. The post said "we are truly grateful," and you believe it.
Sutter Health has made back-to-school giving a regional tradition. In 2025, teams across the Greater Sacramento and Central Valley areas came together to put more than 6,750 backpacks filled with grade-specific supplies into the hands of students through community partners. The Lodi chapter of that effort landed right here on Poplar Street, where the Lodi Boys and Girls Club has spent decades working to inspire young people — especially those who need it most — to reach their full potential as productive, caring citizens. That mission does not happen in a vacuum. It happens because of moments like this one, when an organization outside the Club's walls decides to show up.
What stands out about this particular donation is the framing. It was not a check, and it was not a drop-off. It was nurses using what was supposed to be an internal team-building exercise to do something tangible for Lodi kids. Sutter's own leadership has said that health and education are deeply connected, and that investing in students is a form of whole-person care. It reads like something people say in a press release, but in practice — in a room full of backpacks and kids lighting up — it actually holds. The Club's annual back-to-school event is where those 100 backpacks will find their homes, going out to members' families who are stretching budgets and trying to set their kids up for a strong first day. You can learn more about the Club and how to support their work at bgclodi.com.
